Puma Blue’s ‘Only Trying 2 Tell U’ is difficult to pin down; it has this translucent, floating quality; it runs through your fingers, slips away as you attempt to reach out and grasp it. To this effect, and as a song about love, ‘Only Trying 2 Tell U’ masters that uneasy, wordless feeling that the emotion-to-end-all-emotions leaves an individual. Against an organic backdrop of minimalist jazz percussion and woozy guitars, Puma Blue seems entranced with the intensity of emotion, “I'm terrified of the lies I've let swim into my head, sometimes at night I talk to you even though you're not there…” in that soulful, falsetto croon. Originally written in the artist’s South London bedroom in less than a day, the track was later re-recorded alongside Ben Baptie, resulting in this wonderfully lo-fi rumination. - HT
